Durham Cricket is one of eighteen first class County clubs within the ECB. Since their inception into First Class cricket in 1992 the club has gone onto to win 3 County Championships and 2 One-Day Cups. The 2020 season will see Durham Cricket compete in Division Two of the County Championship and aiming for a promotion place after just falling short the previous season.
Founded in 1882 the Cricket Club represents the historic County of Durham, hosting their Cricket at the Emirates Riverside in Chester-le-Street. The renowned stadium has accommodated a handful of international fixtures but has built its reputation as one of the more scenic venues in County cricket.
Before becoming an established First Class team, Durham Cricket had unparalleled success as a minor County in England. From 1976 to 1982 the cricket club amassed an unbeaten run that stretched to 65 matches, a record that remains unbroken today. This success sparked the club to push for First Class legitimacy in 1989. In 1991 the First Class status was awarded, making Durham Cricket the first new County in 70 years.
The greatest spell of success for the club was from 2007 to 2009 where Durham Cricket brought home 3 major trophies in successive years. The first being the One-Day Cup in 2007 where Durham comfortably beat runners-up Hampshire by 125 runs in a rain soaked final at Lord’s Cricket Ground. The following seasons earned back to back County Championships in 2008 and 2009 after also finishing runners up in 2007, which showcases the dominant run held by the County during that time. Further success was made in 2013 when Durham Cricket succeeded in claiming their 3rd County Championship, capping off 3 County Championships in 6 seasons.
Although finishing 4th in Division 1, the 2016 season ended in disappointment as Durham Cricket were ultimately relegated via penalty from the ECB. The County has yet to return back to the top of County Cricket but have shown promise, especially under the captaincy of overseas player Cameron Bancroft.
